Overcoming Lethargy: Ask The Right Questions To Win The Battle
Posted by Trevor Johnson | Filed under Self Improvement
Overcoming lethargy is not an easy task. The very nature of this problem is the lack, loss or absence of self motivation. A vicious cycle develops when its heavy weight descends upon someone. It can creep up so slowly that its victim may not realize he has developed a problem. Often it takes a near catastrophe to bring the lethargic person to the point where he sees he’s in trouble. And he must reach this point if he ever hopes to get back in the game.
Now, a person who is struggling with lethargy will view the call to action as an almost impossible hurdle. The sluggishness he experiences affects his thinking as well as his activities. He will need to summon all his mental strength to make the decision to change his listless state of mind. However, this is not an impossible task.
The first thing he will need to do is to look objectively at his situation as it really is. This is not the time for doom and gloom or for rose colored glasses. The questions the sufferer must ask should not give rise to despair because of being negatively phrased. “What will become of me if I don’t get my act together?” is not a question which will yield the desired results.
Matters only seem bleaker when the lethargic person lets his mind run away to the possible consequences of his continued inaction. His attitude is likely to be one of total loss as to where to begin his changes. No good can come of this approach.
A more useful query could be, “What one small change can I make today that will improve things for tomorrow?” The answer to this question will not be overwhelming to a person suffering from a lethargic viewpoint. Even if facing an enormous long term task, the lethargy sufferer only needs to commit to one minor change in order to break the dam of inaction. This tiny wedge will yield a perceptible improvement. And the trickle of hope will begin to undermine the blockage constructed by lack of recent goal-oriented actions.
Human beings have struggled with overcoming lethargy since the dawn of mankind. It is a formidable task, but success can be achieved if the sufferer will tackle it in the most commonly productive way. Start with an admission of the problem, then ask the right kind of questions to yield answers that work. Answers that bring hope are the ones that are worth asking.
