Trying To Understand Addiction
Posted by Stella Robinson | Filed under Health & Fitness
For those who have an addiction, or for those affected by the addiction of a loved one or close friend, it’s clear what an addiction means in “real” terms. Difficult to define exactly, it has become popular to think of almost any behavior that has a compulsive quality as an “addiction.” Addictions come in all shapes and forms.
The relationship between mental health issues and substance use is convoluted. According to research gathered at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health in Ontario, more than half of people with substance use disorders also have mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. Some people with mental health problems use different substances to self-medicate, but end up making things worse.
The body develops a physical tolerance to the substance or activity, so people with addictions so people must take larger and larger amounts of a substance to feel the same effects. Some of the common characteristics of destructive addictions are the substance activity or activity that triggers must initially cause feelings of pleasure and changes in emotion or mood. The removal of the drug or activity causes painful withdrawal symptoms. More than physical tolerance, an addiction develops physical and psychological dependence separate from the need to avoid the pain of withdrawal.
These changes are also responsible, in large part, for the drug cravings and compulsion to use that make addiction so powerful. Repeated drug use alters the brain-causing long-lasting changes to the way it looks and functions. The answer lies in the brain. These brain changes interfere with your ability to think clearly, exercise good judgment, control your behavior, and feel normal without drugs.
The complication is the brain and it doesn’t realize what it is that is causing the ecstasy reaction. So when this flutter of activity goes higher the creation of dopamine for the negative behaviors and substances like drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc., it neglects the natural survival instinct reaction mechanisms, replacing them with the ecstasy instead.
Addiction always causes psychological, chemical, and anatomical changes in the brain along with behavior changes. Addiction develops after an initial exposure to the addicting substance or activity. That initial exposure must occur for addiction to develop, but addiction does not always develop. The cycle of quitting the addictive behavior, going through withdrawal, and relapsing may become self-reinforcing.
Research have shown that the risk of substance use disorders is higher for people who have a close relative with addictions. Few people inherit a vulnerability to the addictive properties of drugs. It’s been argued that in some cases, using substances to self-medicate is a learned behavior to cope with stress. Even if a person has a genetic vulnerability to addiction, it does not necessarily mean he will become an addict.
There is always a reason why a person develops an addiction. More often than not other factors that are behind addictions include chaos in the family unit, poverty, having physical, emotional or sexual abuse in the past or present to deal with or conflict. Families play a strong role in substance abuse recovery. With support from family members who are non-judgmental, a person with addictions is more likely to stay in treatment and have a successful outcome.

Say Yes To Life No To Depression
Posted by Rhys Bryant | Filed under Disease & Illness
Maintaining one’s confidence in these trying times can be difficult. It appears that everybody is depressed and moody, there aren’t any jobs, and all of the economic is confusing and not encouraging. This means we have to muster up all of our internal strength and find a way to tough it out.Depression is a natural behavior of human beings but if it continues for a prolonged period, it can be a matter of concern. It’s an emotional disorder that can appear for a number of reasons like stress, fear or inability to attain a desired goal. So how do we boost our confidence?
Substance abuse; poverty; physical; emotional or sexual abuse and violence can all set off teen depression. Genetics plays a role too, as children with family members who have suffered from depression are more susceptible to becoming depressed themselves. Major life events such as the death of a family member or friend, or the separation or divorce of parents may trigger depression. Certain medical conditions, particularly those that affect hormones, can also cause depression in teens.
A depressed person may be overly active (eating too much for example), while another may lose all interest throughout the day. If someone you know or a family member seems to exhibit symptoms of depression or withdraw from their peers and family you should look into depression support groups. Things to watch for include not eating, wanting to stay indoors all the time, sleeping a lot, and alcohol and drug use. Depression is different for each individual.
When going through a long period of deep anxiety and stress connected with my work, I was able to improve the quality of my sleep by using a few simple techniques. I used to take melatonin which helps to make us sleep. I used dried lavender under my pillow which helped me to relax. Holistic treatments for depression will include homeopathic remedies, herbal remedies, chiropractic, acupuncture, psychotherapy or ‘talk therapy’ and even things like exercise, diet and relaxation techniques, including yoga and meditation.
There are times where a person has been prescribed medication for an illness, for example, and a side effect caused by the chemicals in the medication is depression; this can give rise to these feelings even though the person does not have any emotional problems if you want to get out of depression, then you will have to keep yourself busy. Together with this, you may also experience feelings of stress and unhappiness and become unsure how to handle problems; it may be necessary to work through the issues with a professional to get back on track again.
You can always talk with other people, join a gym or take part in certain house chores. All these activities will keep you away from negative thoughts and you will become able to beat depression. Another cause of depression can be the emotional pain felt after losing a loved one. In many cases the loss can be very traumatic. Some depression is brought on after years of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Mentoring may be a great choice for you. There are so many people that need your help and expertise that you have acquired. You can volunteer your services through many agencies. Most schools have after hours and weekend programs that need volunteers.

No question, the term, “sex addict” definitely provokes something in all of us. Does the idea make you uncomfortable, make you laugh, make you say you want to meet one? Or does it make you wish for the capacity to have an emotionally intimate relationship, not dozens of superficial ones? Or perhaps you are concerned for the children and teenagers in your life, that they not become victims of sex crimes or that they (or you) not become victims of someone unable to commit to and sustain a relationship, or spend their lives wondering why they cannot have a healthy relationship.

Gambling : Serious Addiction
Posted by Jacob Ross | Filed under 1
Gambling has an addictive effect on the people who play it. Studies show that though many people participate in gambling as a form of recreation or even as a means to gain an income, gambling, like any behavior which involves variation in brain chemistry, can become a psychologically addictive and harmful behavior in some people. Reinforcement schedules may also make gamblers persist in gambling even after repeated losses.
Gambling is betting money on any game or event. It exists in a variety of forms, from nickel-and-dime poker to state-sponsored lotteries. Different forms of gambling are legal in different parts of the United States and many other parts of the world like Macau and Suncity.
The argument goes like gambling is immoral and illegal but on the other side you would see so many people, both young and old falling prey to this addiction called gambling.
If gambling is an addiction and it is bad then you and me have to find ways and means to finish it off from the bottom. But what we see today is legitimization of gambling not only in the US, but all over the world. The City of Las Vegas is seen as a role model for business and entertainment purposes.
Very few people all over the world are good at gambling. This makes them heroes to all other gamblers who want to emulate them and imitate them. It is an addiction which destroys homes, makes people go bankrupt destroying homes and families and rendering people jobless.
For a gambling addict, the game or bet is his dope. If people want to gamble privately, it should not be thought of as some kind of addiction and has to be stopped but there should be heavy taxes and restrictions on gambling-related businesses to protect the public from harm, something that generally doesn’t happen.
Defining what gambling addiction is and where it comes from is a point of conflict for psychologists and behavioural scientists. Some of them think that it’s a symptom of some other pathological or neurotic behaviour. Others think Lady Luck takes on the importance of a mother figure for a gambling addict.
The severity of a gambling problem can range anywhere from the occasional missed utility bill to a life-threatening relationship with bookmakers and organized crime.

Impact Of Drug Abuse
Posted by Stella Robinson | Filed under Home & Family
Families who have mentally ill relatives whose problems are compounded by substance abuse face problems of enormous proportions. Mental health services are not well prepared to deal with patients having both afflictions.
Often only one of the two problems is identified. If both are recognized, the individual may be bounced back and forth between services for mental illness and those for substance abuse, or they may be refused treatment by each of them.
While the picture regarding dual diagnosis has not been very positive at this point, there are now signs that the problem is being recognized and there is an increasing number of programs trying to address the treatment needs of people with both problems.
Research studies are beginning to help us understand the scope of the problem. It is now generally agreed that as much as 50 percent of the mentally ill population also has a substance abuse problem. The drug most commonly used is alcohol, followed by marijuana and cocaine. Prescription drugs such as tranquilizers and sleeping medicines may also be abused.
It is now reported that both families of mentally ill relatives and mental health professionals underestimate the amount of drug dependency among people in their care. There may be several reasons for this. It may be difficult to separate the behaviors due to mental illness from those due to drugs.
There may be a degree of denial of the problem because we have had so little to offer people with the combined illnesses. Caregivers might prefer not to acknowledge such a frightening problem when so little hope has been offered.
Craving and compulsion to use a drug lead to using it in larger amounts, more frequently, or over a longer period than was intended when use began. Psychological dependence involves giving up social, occupational, or recreational activities because of drug use, as well as persistent use despite knowing that the drug is likely causing a physical or mental problem.

Drug abuse can lead to drug dependence or addiction. Drug addiction may also follow the use of drugs for physical pain relief, though this is rare in people without a previous history of addiction. The exact reason of drug abuse and dependence is not yet known.
The genetic make-up of the individuals, peer pressure, emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and environmental stress are all factors which seem to be involved. Children who grow up in an environment of illicit drug use may first see their elders using drugs. This may put them at a higher risk for developing an addiction later in life for both environmental and genetic reasons.
Drug intoxication and drug overdose may be accidental or intentional. Drug withdrawal symptoms can occur when use of a substance is stopped. Withdrawal symptoms vary, depending on the particular substance. The withdrawal symptom depends on the length of time the drug was being used. Drug intoxication, overdose, and withdrawal can be life-threatening in some situations.
Drug Rehab was brought about to combat the evil effect of drug addiction as its use became more and more prevalent among teenagers and adolescents. The punk and rock culture that was prevalent made the use of these drugs appear ‘cool’ and once caught in the grip of this evil, the individual became more and more dependent on its use.
It is often advised that a patient stays at least 3 months in drug rehab, as those who stay longer have better results than those who spend less time.
Everyone is entitled to a happy, joyous, addiction-free life, with all of its benefits. The best rehab is the one that guarantees improved health, success in relationships, a feeling of self-worth & a life of abundance.

Smoking Helps you Relax?
Posted by Patrick Glancy, BCH | Filed under Home & Family
I’ve helped a lot of people quit smoking. While doing this, I’ve been told a lot of reasons why it is good to smoke.
I’ve been told smoking sharpens your mind, relaxes you, calms you, keeps you from yelling at the kids (or spouse), tastes good with coffee, tastes better after a meal. In short, makes you feel “better”. (I always ask “better than what”?)
I know you don’t really believe these reasons, or why would you be trying to stop smoking. Still, a part of you DOES believe these reasons.
The obvious and overlooked part is you must have a strong reason to continue smoking or you would have already stopped. By the way, there is no law that says your reason to keep smoking has to make any logical sense. It rarely does.
Almost all of the reasons you continue smoking can easily be proven wrong. Example: Maybe smoking helps you relax during work breaks because you get away and go outside to do it.
Even when you know the reason doesn’t make sense, that knowledge doesn’t always help you stop. It might just add to your frustration in the struggle to stop. Just one more reason to stop that doesn’t out-weigh the craving to continue.
It all comes down to two things. The belief that smoking will make you feel better and what you’re trying to feel better than. That’s it.
If you’re hungry you feel like eating. If you’re tired, you feel like sleeping. If you feel bad (stressed, over-burdened, upset, alone, whatever…) you want to feel good. And, whatever your mind has learned feels good, you feel like doing.
This feeling to do something is what you probably call a craving. Many smokers have more than one type of craving going on. The ‘after you wake up’ craving might feel different than the ‘after a meal’ craving. The same principles apply.
SO, how do you change these things? I can write on and on about this (and I have on my web site) It will come down to changing the feelings, motivations and beliefs involved.
First, the ‘bad feeling’ side of things needs to be addressed. If it’s too much stress, get it managed, if it’s a situation that makes you lonely, do what you can to fix it, or look for help.
Second, the belief that smoking makes you feel good (it is often the mistaken, and understandable, belief that smoking equals being an adult, in control, strong, capable, etc…) The fact is, smoking is some plant leaf and chemicals wrapped in paper. The good feeling you’re looking for, and sometimes experience, is created by YOU. YOU make yourself feel better when you smoke. You can make yourself feel just as good when drinking a glass of water. If, your mind believes it.
And that’s the trick. Quit smoking is mainly about modifying behavior. That’s why the success rate of medication and nicotine replacement alone is so poor. The only current exception is Chantix and even Pfizer, the makers of Chantix, recommend behavior modification along with the medication.

Avoid Being A Loser At Casino Gambling
Posted by Scott Hastings | Filed under Recreation & Sports
Everybody basically has the same chance of winning and losing when it comes to gambling. But it does make you ask why some people earn so much and why others lose so constantly. If you lose much of the time does it mean that you are a loser? No, not always. Your approach to gambling may very well be what’s causing the problem. Check out the suggestions below to work out if that’s your problem.
Set a budget for winning and losing
Many folks think that they are losers because they lose so much cash. You want to set a plan for how much cash you are prepared to lose. Once you get to that limit, then it’s time to quit. Don’t get sucked into the temptation to keep gambling to win back what you have lost. This will not occur. You will not win it back. After you have arrived at your monetary limit, then give up. This also relates to winning. Set a restriction on the quantity of money that you are going to win. After you achieve that target, then give up. Don’t risk that money with the belief that you will win more . It is more probable that you’ll lose it.
Don’t scrounge to bet
When you have lost all you can - you are done! Go home! Don’t borrow any one else’s money so you can lose more. All that will do is cause you more Problems than you already have. Borrowing is one of the worst things you can do to sustain your gambling. You are just compounding the problem.
Set a time limit on gambling
as well as having a monetary budget, you also need a time budget. Whether or not you are victorious or losing, you want to set a time limit on the amount of time that you are going to expend gambling. Regardless of what your situation, once you have reached your time limit, then quit. Go and relax, take a snooze or whatever, but get away from the gambling once your cutoff point has been reached.
Get some rest
Don’t gamble with out a break. Gambling can be very nerve wracking. And if you are gambling for a lengthy period of time, the stress just keeps mounting up. So, take five while you’re feeling tired. If you get too knackered, then you may start to make poor decisions which will effect your game. Take a break, get some air, get something to eat or even take a snooze. Then, when refreshed, you can come back.
Engage in other activities
Don’t just gamble. Have other stuff planned to do when you are not gambling. Other interests will get your head away from the gambling and thus will relax you and get you mentally geared up to take on the challenge when you return to the table or slots. Always have something else to do. Getting away can clear your intelligence and give you different outlook.
Avoid stress and emotional upset
Don’t bet when you’re under lots of emotional stress. This will only lead to Problems and complications . You can not think obviously when you are distressed or distracted. Keep away from gambling if you’re under any type of stress. If you do not, the chances of you winning are least.

How To Avoid Being A Gambling Addict
Posted by Scott Hastings | Filed under Recreation & Sports
Everybody knows about the plain obsessions to drugs and alcohol. But a lesser known obsession is the slavery to betting. Many people do not think of this addiction when the question comes up, but betting could be a most important addiction which can be extraordinarily tough to crack. A betting obsession can end up in stealing or even suicide if you get too deep. And it is so easy to fall into this type of addiction. With gambling being officially permitted in twenty-seven states, the power to be trapped in such an activity is extraordinarily genuine.
Many will say that is too easy to reach an addictive state with betting. And in some ways that is true. But what it boils down to is determination and self control. The answer is in knowing when to stop. And things which many of us don’t view as gambling actually are. Stuff like bingo and the lottery are actually betting. They would possibly not be on the grand scale of some other betting, but they’re still gambling and can still initiate an addiction. But when you look at these sorts of gambling you should ask why more folk don’t get dependent.
It is because, as mentioned above, they understand what their boundaries are and when to finish. The difficulty with dependent gamblers is that they lose all of their level-headedness. They keep gambling and believe that they can never suffer defeat. This keeps them going for more and more. The more they succeed, the more they gamble. The one thing to remember is that no-one wins all the time. Eventually, you’re going to lose.
The sole consistent winner is the company. If you just gamble for fun, that’s fine. But be really wary ; and do not get too carried away. Since you are gambling as a recreation, it could take only one or two big wins before you suspect that you could be adequate to do this “full time.”
It is when you fall into this type of thinking that you may be simply sucked into and addictive state. If you end up heading in this direction then you may want to back off. Ask a relation or a pal if he’ll bet with you. But make the stakes nothing less than dessert or cleaning the house. Stay away from using any money at all. If you’re feeling yourself being drawn to to gambling on a constant or daily basis, take whatever precautions you can to steer clear of casinos or perhaps a place that sells lottery tickets. You do not want to have anything, at all, to do with gambling if you’re being pulled in this direction.
Gambling can be restricted. If you feel that you are barely able to keep away from any kind of betting situation, seek out some professional help. It’s miles better to do it now than to hang fire till it is too late. Gambling is something that can be avoided. It can be controlled. Don’t allow yourself to go down the road to self annihilation. This is a choice which you can make. So make it while you understand that you may have a difficulty. If you wait too long, you will at last reject that any crisis exists.
