Best Man Wedding Speeches - How To Dazzle Your Audience

You’ve got four months to go to come up with the best of best man wedding speeches, since your best friend asked you to be his best man. And you’re not sure speech writing is the greatest of your abilities. You are still coming to terms with him getting married and you guys not being able to hang out as you used to, but you also want the guy to be happy and if giving the best speech is part of that, you’re up to it.

The next couple of months go by and the speech doesn’t even cross your mind; you’ve got plenty of time left to do it. One day you hear something about the wedding in a conversation and you remember. You promise yourself to remember, even scribble something into your agenda. You’re planning on writing one of those funny best man wedding speeches. You misplace the agenda.

The next three weeks just seem to fly by and a feeling of pressure is settling in: you do still need to get something written down. You’re an organized kind of guy, so you plan on taking Saturday morning. A plan is always good. Friday afternoon the phone rings, and your best friend asks you to help him pick up that couch for the new apartment. Hey, sure you’re going to help. You had something else planned for Saturday, you memory faintly prompts. Well couldn’t have been very important after all, or you’d have remembered, right?

Another week goes by; when during the fitting of the tux the thought shoots up your spine and into your stomach: you still got squat when it comes to best man wedding speeches. Now what? The wedding is just days away.

Should you ask your other friends for help? Nope, you’d never hear the end of that one. Then what? Dad? Oh what the heck, you’ll give it a try. Of course he’s happy to oblige and gives you enough pointers for three speeches. You take your notes and a yellow pad and prepare yourself for battle. This can’t be that hard, can it now? Hours later you run out of paper, you’re dazed and you still got squat. You lost the battle and are ready to surrender and wave the white flag.

Ehh, no, not yet. You remember your mom had a book from way back when that had best man wedding speeches examples, or was it groom’s? Who cares? You go digging for the book and yes, it’s still around and yes, the speeches were for the groom. - If this comes close to describing your life lately . . . you need a plan.

When writing a wedding speech you need to build a skeleton or structure to build on and to fill out. Make a list of the things you like best about your friend and also about the bride. Also make a short list of a few good anecdotes from stuff you’ve been through together. Funny is great, icky is to be avoided and always keep the bride’s feelings in mind (and with that also the grooms feelings and dignity).

Start with a focus on the couple and underline a couple of great things about them as a couple. Then you can do a flash back to when you got to know your friend and dig up some long forgotten anecdotes (again: keep it tasteful and funny). Go over the time the bride and groom got to know each other from your perspective (the official version of course). Weave in the great things about your friend and also nice details about the bride. Express your hopes for their future happiness, of which of course you will be an integral part and . . . close with a witty toast. Keep it short and too the point and you can’t miss.

So here’s one structure you could use. Fill it out with your memories and experiences and you will have a wedding speech ready to go and concise to boot. One word of advice though: Never embarrass anyone present when doing best man wedding speeches. It would quickly dampen the spirit of the celebration and could do permanent damage to your friendship. If you want your friendship with both of them to last a life-time, stay on the good side of the bride.
