Something I have learned from recent shopping for my loved ones this holiday season is that you can never know where you can find some great deals for gifts. These were store that I knew and often visited since they had great deals on name brand clothes that I would normally pass on if I found them at the mall. At Rugged I found a wide variety of holiday gifts and treat that were not only beautiful but quite unique and interesting. Some of them my family gave at a gift exchange with some surprising results. We were very strict with our spending purchasing items that had a price under $5. But many of the products were from much more prestigious stores and were originally as high as $29.
The Dollar store came through once again. These stores are really striving to serve the one stop for just about everything you can think off and all them for a dollar or just a little more. The key is in the variety. You should go in looking from something interesting that doesn’t cost much not for an item that has high quality; nevertheless, you may find some very surprising finds. Some of the most well received gifts so far this season for me actually came from here. It just needed me to be more imaginative in what I picked.
Wal-Mart is a gimme but Sam’s Club and other big box stores are a great place to shop this season. If you have not gotten your membership do so immediately. There were some excellent savings on electronics, toys, and even some recreation items that your entire family can enjoy. It’s perfectly understandable that this decision was made - but looking at sales figures thus far, it does look as if the retailers may have misjudged the mood of consumers. Popular toys like the Zhu Zhu pets and Mattel’s Mindflex game are flying off the shelves. Supply is lagging demand and it’s fast becoming extremely difficult to locate these toys in stores. The closer we get to Christmas, the worse this will become.
Many retailers, having realized their error, are now trying to arrange for new deliveries of stock. However, most toys are manufactured in Asia these days, which means that new deliveries will have a sea voyage of a few weeks at least. Building up stock levels in time for Christmas will simply not be possible in many cases.
It’s now possible, as a result of the huge gap between supply and demand, to find Zhu Zhu hamsters selling on eBay for more than $ 150. That’s way above the normal ticket price - and prices could rise even more as Christmas draws near and parents become desperate. It’s a lot of money to pay for a child’s toy which, even if it is currently all the rage, will probably be yesterday’s news a few months from now.
You might be well advised to think about giving a more traditional toy this year - especially if value for money is important to you. Classics such as Scrabble, Monopoly, Lego and Hornby Dublo train sets are long term favorites for good reason. They always make a welcome addition to any youngster’s toy collection and will still be in use and being enjoyed for years to come.
