Building The Right DIY Greenhouse For You
Posted by Eddie John | Filed under Home & Family
Most gardeners’ hearts start to twitter when you talk about greenhouses. Winter is a dull time for them and if they have a greenhouse they can putter about even in the winter. Seeds can be started for spring planting in a greenhouse and you can be ahead of the game when it is time to plant. This is also a place where you can put your rosemary or lemon verbena plants so that you do not loose them and have to start all over again when the season starts. DIY greenhouse kits are available, somewhat inexpensive, and they are very easy to build. There is no excuse for not building your dream greenhouse.
There are certain things you have to decide before you build your own greenhouse. The climate in which you live has a great deal to do with the greenhouse you choose. If you live in a warm climate you probably will not need to heat the greenhouse but you will need to vent it so it does not get too hot. You will have to think of ways to shade the plants during the hottest part of the day. If you live in a cold climate you need to think about how to insulate the greenhouse and what method you will use to heat it.
Make sure to pick a spot in your yard for the greenhouse that is in direct sun. It is good to give the plants an east west exposure to get the most out the sunlight you can. If you do not have any space in direct sunlight then go with partial shade.
You can make a greenhouse out of anything that is clear. There are plans Online that detail how to make a house out of old beat up storm doors that you would use on your back door. There are other plans on how to make a greenhouse from a wooden frame that his stacked with plastic water and pop bottles. There are also the more common materials with which to make a green house like fiberglass or old fashion glass. If you want something that is not going to break if a stone flies up from the lawn mower try the more expensive polycarbonate panels that are made especially for greenhouse use. If you are on a budget you can get the type of green house that is made of plastic sheets over a series of pipes.
The floor of the greenhouse is an integral part of building. Many people construct the floor from concrete because it makes the greenhouse stable and flat. Other people prefer not having extreme elements between the greenhouse and the ground and opt for gravel and some just have a dirt floor. Still others construct wood floors or use railroad ties all along the floor. You can also set concrete pavers or bricks in the ground on sand to make a floor for the green house. If you use just a dirt floor you can just add some top soil and plant right there instead of putting everything in pots. It is very important to make sure the floor does not get flooded or wet from outside weather.
Many gardeners make benches out of wood that line the perimeter inside. They put their pots on those benches and do not have to stoop to the ground to garden. Heating units can be run from either gas or electricity so you need to build your greenhouse where there is a gas line or availability of electricity. You might even decide to put some electrical outlets in the greenhouse or lights so you can see at night. Do you want to run a water line right into the greenhouse instead of having to carry water to feed the plants? These are all considerations that have to be met.
Cheap DIY greenhouses are the ones that look like a big tunnel made from plastic sheet draped over PVC or other piping. Since PVC is not environmentally friendly these types of greenhouses are sometimes avoided. They are functional and most important they are very affordable. The next level of green house is one made with a wooden frame and then glass or fiberglass is installed. The most expensive is to install the polycarbonate panels and if you live in an area where kids play all the time, this might be the best in the long run because the panels will not break or shatter no matter what hits them. Building your own greenhouse will be an adventure and you are sure to find a green house that you can build easily and afford even if it is built out of water bottles or old back doors.
To build a DIY greenhouse is not all that hard. Diy greenhouse kits on the market today make it so incredibly easy that every single home owner can build his or her own greenhouse.

How to Build a Chicken Coop to Fit Your Budget
Posted by Ellen Roberts | Filed under Home & Family
In order to have maximum success with this project to keep it under a firm budget, there are a variety of things to keep in mind to building a chicken coop. Chicken farmers who spend more money than needed building their backyard chicken coop could have saved themselves hundreds of dollars by just a few simple adjustments. Here are some key facts you should know about building a chicken house on a budget.
Know Your Land Before Building - Always first take a look at the land you have available. Depending on the plan of building a chicken coop, most cases would require some landscaping to be done before building. The reason that landscaping is important is due to the fact that building on a non firm ground would significantly decrease the stabilization as time progressed which could lead to rebuilding the chicken coop again which is costly and time consuming. Also to if you choose to hire help to do the landscaping, your going to pay big dollars because it can get pricey.
The other option is to do it yourself, but this will still take time and could still cost you a small amount of money. The best way to do this is to just survey the entire land you have available and pick a place where you would not need to landscape.
Windows Needs to be Properly Placed - Another way to help you save money is to make sure that the windows are properly placed in the chicken coop to allow proper lighting and ventilation. Unless you plan on wiring in electrical light which can be expensive, windows are going to be the primary light source that the chickens will have. The windows will also serve for ventilation purposes which is critical in helping the chickens maintain good health. When the windows are stationed well, you essentially kill two birds with one stone as well as saving money in the process.
Consider Building a Smaller Sized Chicken Coop - Often two to three chickens will be plenty to give you more than enough eggs that you need daily. Building material is where you will incur the highest amount of cost. And the smaller you build the fewer materials you will need. Unless you’re planning on selling the eggs commercially, that would be the only reason to build bigger. By just taking the right measurements, you can decrease your building costs and still build a chicken coop that’s right for your budget. If you feel you need to build bigger just keep in mind that the costs will be more and also maintenence down the road will be also.

How to Use Metal Band Saws Correctly?
Posted by Nigella Dawson | Filed under Home & Family
Metal band saws are used for a lot different purposes, the most common obviously is for cutting various types of metal. People use them for cutting other types of material but they should be used only on metal. If you use a metal band saw to cut other material aside from metal you could possibly damage the blades. The teeth on a blade for cutting metal are small and close together. This allows for more precise cutting. Bladed used to cut wood on the other hand have big teeth that are much further apart. Carbide tipped saw blades are used to cut extrusions, solids, aluminum, brass, copper and bronze. Friction and hot saw blades are used for cutting steel tubes, decking material and angel cuts. Solid high speed steel blades are used for cutting stronger metals.
Band saws come in two different styles. The horizontal band saw and the vertical band saw. The vertical band saw is larger than the horizontal band saw. It is a stand alone saw. It has four legs with rubber on the feet. This is to keep it from moving around during the cutting process. It is best for making straight cuts through the metal material as it is pushed through the saw blade. When pushing the material through the saw, be sure to keep your hands at least 4 or 5 inches away from the blade. Use a metal stick to push the material closer to the blade.
Horizontal band saws are hand held devices. They usually have a rubber handle to make them easy to hold. They are good for cutting straight lines, curves and other cuts. The material being cut must be tied to a cutting table so that it doesn’t move during the cutting process. The saw blade is simply pushed through the material. The saw usually shuts off automatically when it is finished. Horizontal band saws are usually hydraulically powered.
The wheels that hold the blade on the saw are the drive wheel, which is attached to the power source and the idler wheel which is loosened or tightened depending on how tight the blade needs to be. The saw can be powered hydraulically or it can be powered with an electric motor. A blade guide is used to keep the blade securely in place and to guard the blade. The wheel sizes can be larger or smaller depending on what is being cut.
It is recommended that you remove the blade from the saw every time you finish cutting. The blade gets very hot during the cutting process and it expands a little bit. If you leave it on the saw after you are finished it will cool down with tension being applied to it. This may cause it to break or crack, so always remove the blade for cooling. Be sure to wear protective gloves because the blade will be hot.
Safety is essential when using any type of power equipment, especially metal band saws. Be sure that the place where you are cutting does not have any flammable material nearby that can catch on fire. Also be careful need gasoline or any other material that can be ignited by the sparks that will be produced. Wear protective eye goggles. Be sure that your clothing is tight fitting so you don’t get a sleave or shirt tail caught in the saw blade. Also be sure you have adequate ventilation.
Power tools are not toys. There have been a lot of stories of people using band saws to show off in from of their friends and ending up with serious injuries. You can easily have a hand or fingers cut off. Use the tools are they were intended only.
To summarize, metal band saws used in the proper way can be very helpful. Simply follow proper instructions for using them and proper safety measures and your projects and work will be a lot simplier.

You might not know this, but a very interesting style of playing took hold during the blues and rock eras of music. It is known as the bottleneck style because of the way players expressed their lyrics by sliding objects along the strings, which produced human sounding voices.
People just loved the way the guitar would sound when an object would slide along the strings of the guitar which made a wailing and whining sound. From here the sounds become more like a singing voice than an instrumental voice.
Interesting to note that the players back then used actual bottle necks placed on their first and second fingers. They would slide the glass along the strings producing really unique sounds. Some preferred using steel blades or knives. Many guitarists would also place the guitar down on their laps as it was easier to slide.
Another style of playing the country guitar is using the “chicken picken” technique. Walon Jennings started it by pulling the strings with his right hand finger while at the same time damping the strings with his left hand. Today many lead guitarists use this technique when doing solos. Of course there are many different styles to play a guitar and no doubt you will find your own unique style.
