Reduce Your Risk of Blood Clots when Traveling: 5 Tips
Posted by Chris Gray Faust | Filed under Health & Fitness
After an average road trip and flight in 1999, the doctor diagnosed me with a deep vein thrombosis or DVT - essentially a blood clot - in my lower leg.
You don’t hear much about the risk of travel-related clots here in the United States. In Britain, though, DVTs are known as Long Haul syndrom, and travelers are informed about the possiblities of blood clots forming on extensive plane trips.
I didn’t know I had a clot; it felt more like a muscle cramp. But it put me in the hospital for more than 10 days, where I had a painful heparin drip and a six-month regimen of blood thinners. Here’s what you can do so a clot doesn’t happen to you:
1. If you’re in the car and driving a long distance, stop and walk often. You need to walk around to keep blood from pooling in your legs.
2. When flying, get up and stretch your legs if possible. I always try to get an exit row so I have greater mobility. Again, you need to keep your blood moving. If the attendants discourage you from getting up, try to move your legs around by flexing your feet and ankles.
3. Pop a baby aspirin when traveling. I take one every day, as aspirin in general helps iwth vascular and cardio health
4. Pack compression stockings to wear on the plane. Ok, they certainly aren’t fashionable. But I generally do try to wear them on longer flights to increase blood flow to the lower legs. You can find the knee-high versions at Rite-Aid, CVS, Target, Wal-Mart and other drug stores. Wearing loose clothing also helps.
5. Stay hydrated. Dehydration can lead to blood thickening - which can lead to clots. At the very least, chugging down water will make you get up to use the bathroom, so you’re moving around.

Lost Luggage - You Can Reduce The Risk On A Vacation Flight
Posted by Dorothy Yamich | Filed under 1
Whether you have flown on flights for business, or holidays and vacations, you may have lost luggage or know of people that have. Here are some travel tips that can help you reduce this risk.
It is estimated that more than a million bags are lost by commercial airlines each year in the United States alone. How much luggage that get lost in the whole world is anybody’s guess. Here are some tips that may help you recover your bags if they are ever lost.
Attach two or three tags with your name, home address, and phone number to the handle and the zipper-pulls of each bag that you are checking. There is less of a chance that all of the tags could get torn off during transit. You should make sure that you have removed any old airline tags that are still attached to the luggage you’re checking as they could confuse the baggage handlers.
Be sure to place the same contact information, including a copy of your itinerary and your destination address inside each piece luggage. That way, if they do get lost and are found in time, they could be forwarded to your hotel.
If you can, pick luggage with preferably a bright or odd color that will stand out from all of the black and brown bags. Know the brand name of the luggage that you own and attach a colorful scarf or ribbon to the handle to make identification easier. Stick a few decals or a contrasting colored tape to all of the sides of the bags so they can be easier to see as it goes around the carousel. Remember these details, or even better, take a digital picture of your luggage just before you leave and bring it with you. This will also help the lost luggage airport staff in finding your bags if they become lost in transit and turn up at their office. It will also help if you have to make a claim.
It will help if you make a list of what you are carrying in your luggage and put that list in you carry-on bag. The chance of your luggage going astray in transit increases when you are on connecting, or delayed flights. You should pack all of your valuables, including your laptop, Blackberry, travel documents, prescriptions, etc., in your carry-on bag. It is best to pack only the things you can afford to lose in your checked baggage. Many analysts believe that the airline industry’s problem of lost luggage is not going to be resolved anytime soon.
What can you do your luggage gets lost?
Go right away to the baggage claim office and file a claim. Many airlines have a twenty-four hour window of time that starts from when your flight arrives to file and be eligible for compensation. You will get a claim receipt to check the tracking of your luggage with your airline by phone, or on the airline’s website. Make sure you keep your flight documents until the lost luggage mix up has been resolved.
How can you guarantee that the airlines will not lose your luggage?
There are a number of companies that will send your luggage in the U.S., such as UPS, FedEx, or DHL, directly to your hotel or destination address for a reasonable cost. If you are staying in a hotel, your luggage will be brought to your room. When you consider that in the U.S. alone, well over a million bags are lost by the airlines every year, this service may be well worth considering. If you are traveling by air through Europe, FirstLuggage.com, has a similar service.

Flights: Where To Look For The Best Prices
Posted by Milagros Sergi | Filed under 1
Are you planning on travelling? If you are, you should certainly travel in one of the safest ways possible. Flying is currently one of the fastest and safest way to travel anywhere you want to go in the world. How do you travel to your destinations for a decent price though?
If you buy your tickets during the seasons where there are not a lot of travelers flying, you can be sure that you will find an abundance of discounts on tickets. You will be able to acquire even greater discounts on your tickets when you know exactly where to look when purchasing your tickets.
One of the first considerations you should take into account is the timing of your flight. You should certainly avoid travelling during the busiest times of the year if you can. When you travel at the busiest times of the year, you can easily schedule your flights, but you will not be able to acquire very good discounts this way.
The Internet is great for saving money, if you plan to fly from point A to point B. It’s important to remember, however, that it’s not always the choice to make. Doing your homework first is the best advice out there. Also, using common sense is important. Finding a no-frills airline does not mean you’ve found the answer to your travel plans-nor does it mean you’ll fly for less money.
Don’t be afraid to do some research. Knowing how much the major airlines would charge for your flight, will allow you to compare fare prices. You can find practical, inexpensive flying options, but you have to be willing to dig a little to make sure it’s right for your circumstances. Low-priced tickets are usually non-refundable, so changing your flight plans could prove costly. Check out other stipulations as well. Standby flights, upgrades, and accrued mileage may not be options available to you, so educate yourself before you commit to booking that flight.
After you have found the cheapest airline tickets being offered to the general public right now, you can be sure that you now know where to find the cheapest airline companies in the industry. When you know which companies are the cheapest, you can visit their websites.
The best place you can look once you know which airlines are the cheapest are the airline’s own websites. Airlines often post the best prices for their flights on their own websites. Once you have seen the prices they are offering, you can be sure you have found the best prices on the Internet right now.
You should also check the prices of the discount airlines available today. These airlines run their businesses on the core idea that they should beat their competition when it comes to price. So, when you check their prices, you can be sure you will be looking at some of the cheapest prices in the airline industry. When you make sure you know that you are flying at an unpopular time, and you search through all of the offerings available through online search engines, along with checking the cheapest airline sites, you can be sure you are going to get the very best deal you can get on your flight.
Flights are currently one of the fastest and safest means to travel anywhere you want to go in the world. How do you travel to your location for a decent rate though? We’ve got the inside skinny on Alabama Flights!

How To Find Cheap International Flights
Posted by Ramon van Meer | Filed under Travel
Finding cheap international flights may seem like a daunting task. In reality, this is not the case. Using the wonderful tools of the modern age, it is reasonably easy to get superb deals on international flights. Provided with these tools and tricks, you will find cheap international flights and travel like millionaires did 30 years ago.
As you might expect, the internet is a great tool for finding cheap international flights. Sites like letsflycheaper.com which let you search for superb deals are an excellent starting point. Sites like these are awfully straightforward to use. You simply select where you are flying from, where you are flying to, and when you are flying.
In order to get really cheap international flights, you can employ a few handy tricks on these sites. Booking a round trip is an easy way to lower the cost. This is because in many cases, it is cheaper to get the ticket to and from your destination at the same time than it is to purchase them separately.
Another useful trick to get cheap international flights is to have a look for kickbacks from indirect flights. If you are flying to Bangkok, for example, it could be cheaper to book a flight which has multiple stops versus booking a direct flight to Bangkok. It might also be cheaper to fly to another Asian town and then either use a cheaper local airline or use an alternative type of transport ( train, bus, taxi, etc ) for the last leg of your journey to Bangkok.
You must use multiple travel sites, apply these techniques, and then select the best cost. This will give you the cheapest possible rate for an international flight.
Being flexible with your departure date can significantly reduce the price tag of international flights. It may seem strange, but your booking costs will often go down when you move your dates around by only a few days. If you book in advance, you will also probably get a superior deal. This is because airlines raise their prices on last-minute ticket purchases because people who buy tickets last minute are often willing to pay a higher cost.
In general, you will pay lots more money if you make a decision to travel during top seasons. If you travel during non-peak seasons, you’ll save a large amount of money on airfare. Generally, you may find the cheapest international flights between Fall and Spring.
If you use these resources, you’ll be able to find cheap international flights regardless of your destination. Finding cheap international flights really only requires you to plan in advance, spend a while hunting for deals, and being flexible. It’s really not that hard at all!

Travels On A Budget

The best way to realize your dream of a vacation to London is by searching the Internet. Every aspect of your trip can be planned ahead of time. Finding an inexpensive flight, researching which historical sights most interest you, and selecting that perfect hotel canall be done on the web. By investing in some internet research you might even save enough money to spend more time in England and, at the very least, your trip will be customized to your interests.
Planning trips abroad used to be so difficult you almost couldn’t do it without a travel agent. You just couldn’t get the information you needed. Sometimes it can cost you more than you realized in higher airfares and hotel commissions. Yes, you actually paid for the luxury of having someone else plan your trip. Today, you can still leave it to a travel agent if you like or you can do it yourself by browsing any number of websites. You can compare airfares, hotel rates; you can even find discounted rates on the wonderful activities.
But today, you can take charge of your itinerary by investing a small amount of timedoing internet research. You know better than a travel agent what kinds of meals you desire, what level of comfort you expect from a hotel, and what activities will make the trip meaningful to you and your family. There are a variety of trip-planning sites online. Some online travel sites offer packaged vacations which allow you to pay one price tocover all fees, hotels, rental cars, and even event tickets. Often these all-inclusive packages are offered at a discount when compared to individual costs.
The internet is a great way to have your eager kids participate in the planning of your vacation. You can help them browse for places to visit on your trip, allowing it to be a more fun trip for everyone. They may even surprise you with their online aptitude and help you save money!
London is rich in museums, fine dining, art and culture but there are many other fun and exciting things to do while there. The internet brings you a way to discover the area before you arrive. You can book multiple flights so you can visit many cities on your trip. Flying out of London’s airports is so fairly priced it may be cheaper than driving, taking a bus or going by train.
Make sure you pack lightly when you travel anywhere in Europe. The various bus systems will only have space for a small bag. If you are planning on getting around by taxi everything your whole party brought will have to fit in the trunk or you will have to hire a second taxi. Even if you are travelling in a group driving in a bus too much luggage can make it difficult.
Airlines are constantly in price competition, and the benefits of their competition has been passed on to consumers. Many families and couples are already taking advantage of the great deals to be found online. With London’s romantic city-scape and beautiful countryside, anyone would want to spend time exploring, and thanks to the great rates to be found online, anyone now can. The money you will save by shopping online will help make your trip even more special as you try out that famous restaurant or treat yourself to a tour of a fine winery during your stay.

Pod Hotels Can Save You Money When On Vacations Or Holidays
Posted by Dorothy Yamich | Filed under Travel
Whenever you book air flights and travel through airports on vacations or holidays, look around. You may just see pod hotels. Here is the low-down on these unique airport and city accommodations.
Pod hotels are not a new concept. These type of hotels have been around for a number of years, but most travelers have never even heard of them. They had their beginnings in Japan as “capsule hotels”, that were, and are still being used mainly by business people on stopovers. Today pod hotels are becoming very popular with vacation travelers as well, because they are convenient and are cheaper than regular hotels. They are located in the U.S., Britain, Europe, and Asia, usually in, or near airports.
The pod hotel concept is in its infancy in the U.S. and Europe, but it is growing by leaps and bounds as more and more holiday travelers demand this unique service. A number of entrepreneurs are building small, pod-like hotel rooms that are usually rented by the hour, or number of hours.
Most pod hotel rooms are small, but comfortable and convenient, and they can have all the amenities of a regular hotel room at a fraction of the cost. They can be a good choice for budget-conscious business travelers and vacationers.
Some pod hotels are situated in airports such as the ones at Yotel.com, located in London, England’s Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.
EasyHotels.com have pod hotels located in Zurich, London, Basal, and Budapest. QBICHotels.com have pod hotels in the cities of Amsterdam and Antwerp. A New York pod hotel is called the PickwickArms.com.
There is a new evolution in pod hotels called Metronap Sleep Pods. These space age style pods are starting to spring up not only on airport concourses, but in prominent locations in office buildings. They are excellent for tourists and business travelers, as well as tired people and executives that just want to have a nap. Even though these sleep pods sit out in the open, they partially enclose for privacy, but will not feel claustrophobic. They also are equipped with noise canceling headphones. The rental is by the hour and is reasonably priced.

Luxury cruises rely on offering excellent service to keep its clientele happy. Within reason, a cruise ship can be classed as luxury if the service is outstanding, even though the rest of the offerings are not quite so good. Luxury cruise packages offer you a wide range of facilities with 5-star service in each of them.
Cruise prices invariably rise as demand increases as the available accommodation is taken. Be wary of any discounts that are offered. Prices shot up again at the start of this year, despite the onset of the recession. Passenger groups were furious after fares on some routes rose by more than 10 per cent.
If you don’t have accurate details regarding cruise to nowhere package deals, then you might make a bad choice on the subject. Don’t let that happen: keep reading.

New Guinea - Island Paradise
Posted by Julie Granzien | Filed under Travel
New Guinea is the world’s second largest island, and is likewise one of the world’s last, vast and remote wildernesses. With a complex political history, this great island is divided. The western half, is now known as Papua, a region of Indonesia, while the eastern half, Papua New Guinea or PNG, has been an independent country since 1975.
New Guinea is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and endures random volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and occasional tsunamis. A mountain range rises across the length of New Guinea and deep rainforest is all enveloping.
The island contains an astonishing wealth of natural features, some protected by National Parks and UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserves, but huge swathes of it are unmapped and virtually unreachable. The main towns and cities of both countries are, naturally, on the coast, but there’s little in the way of roads or infrastructure. Travel is mainly by boat. Rivers criss-cross the whole region or you can travel on foot, or by plane
New Guinea is inhabited by about 1,000 different tribes, speaking a similar number of languages. Tourists are few, mainly visiting the extraordinary Dani culture, in Papua’s enjoyable Baliem Valley. Despite being nominally Christians, the Dani live traditionally.
Men wear penis sheaths, women wear short skirts, produced with orchid fibres, worn beneath the backside. This high valley, surrounded by mountain peaks, is a vision of incredibly fertile cultivated fields. The Baliem River provides fish, and pigs are essential, being eaten at every ceremony.
In PNG the major attraction is the tribal hunter-gatherers who live along the banks of the island’s longest river, the Sepik. This culture is intrinsically entwined with crocodiles, and the men’s massive scarification reflects the animal’s scales.
Living in communal longhouses, Sepik River people are famous for their wood-carvings. Varying in style from village to village, most of these find their way into the truly great museums of the world.
