Because of its functionality and ease of use, the WD TV Live is very popular among digital media player owners. Release in October 2009, Western Digital made some great upgrades from the previous version, the WD TV. Now, the WD TV Live HD Media Streamer can support video playback up to 1080p TrueHD and supports Dolby Digital sound through the optical audio output or the HDMI output. The menu systems have also been upgraded in the new WD TV Live model making it easier to navigate to your media.

Western Digital WD TV Live Network-Ready HD Media Player

Priced at: $119.99 USD

The Western Digital WD TV Live gives you the ability to stream your media files like video, music, and photos from your digital media player to your home theater entertainment system. The WD TV Live unfortunately does not come with an internal hard drive from the manufacturer, so you will have to connect it to an external USB mass storage device (UMD) or your existing wireless home network. There is a recommended external hard drive from the manufacturer, the Western Digital My Book Essential 1 terabyte model, which will give you loads of space for your media files. So your WD TV must be hard wired to your home network, or there is also a wireless adapter, the Linksys Range Plus Wireless USB Compact Adapter is recommended by Western Digital, that will give you the ability to go wireless and stream your media anywhere in your house.

Whether you choose to go wireless or leave your WD TV Live HD wired to your system, this digital media player is in the running with some really good competition. The WD Live is very similar to both the Patriot Box Office HD and the HDX1000 NMT, but unlike both of these players, the WD does not offer the option of adding an internal hard disk. If you are not interested in adding your own hard drive, then the WD TV Live HD is an awesome media player. It still comes with all the latest features including 1080p video output through HDMI and also comes with Dolby Digital and DTS. Here are the specs on the WD TV Live:
